It became tough for May to survive at that house. The woman, let's call her Ms. K, was a double faced person. She acted all lovey dovey to May if there were guests or someone important to her. When she was all alone at home, Ms. K would threaten her and ask her to keep working in the kitchen, ask her to keep it clean
May knew that Ms. K’s husband was one of her best friends with her dad as she had seen the man hanging out with her father when she was young. However, the man never interfered or bothered to care about how May was being mistreated at the house. Other than the mental abuses like hurling bad words and gaslighting May saying that she was useless and would never succeed in life, the toxic Ms.K began to physically abuse her. May even wondered if Ms. K had a psychological issue as she was enjoying torturing May and loved her son with utmost care.
May wanted to try and contact her brother but was unaware of his whereabouts. The school authorities May was studying observed how tired and skinny May had become in a span of a few months. They decided to confront her but May was worried for her life. May said that she was fine and had no issues in her house even though she was underfed and was ordered to sleep on the cold floor. The school authorities even conducted surprise visits and never found any evidence of mistreatment.
However, Ms. K hated all of the bad attention upon her and decided to punish May. She told May that she wouldn't even clear her high school, would be thrown on the streets and would be begging for scraps while Ms. K would throw her a few pennies for her survival. All of these harsh words and abuses hurt May as she was a growing teenager deprived of her own rights.
