How providing fake news might make a negative impact on others?

 Chris was working in a media agency. All he wanted was to make quick bucks and increase the ratings of the media organization so that he gets promoted in the organization. He used to make up fake stories and fake news and get it published on the website.

All of the fake news used to go unnoticed but it never stayed so. Once Chris came up with the news saying how the CEO of a company, Mr.Scott Helmsworth had underpaid his staff and forced them to work for longer hours. As soon as the news got published, Chris thought the news would be sensationalizing. However, he never realized that there was an actual Mr. Scott Helmsworth who was CEO of a company.

“Sir, this website has a news story”. Scott’s personal assistant showed the news story to Scott. “This explains the calls I have been getting since afternoon. I can see that the news was published just before afternoon. Please reach out to the website owner. I would like to have a word with him.”, said Scott.

Chris was called to the office by the website editor. He was very angry and it was written all across his face. Chris proudly walked into the cabin. “Mr. Chris, Where did you get the information about the news that you had published in the afternoon?” asked the editor. “I got it from a trustworthy source.”, said Chris. 

“Mr. Scott Helmsworth reached out to us a few minutes back…” Chris was surprised as he was listening to the editor. “He said that the news was fake and he would charge us for defamation. So, I wanted to confirm if you received the news from a trustworthy source or not” The color on Chris’s face started draining right away. 

The editor decided to carry out an investigation and found out that there was no source and the news story was the result of Chris’s imagination. He was immediately fired from his position.

Providing fake news just for the sake of higher ratings is not an ethical thing to do. Unethical practices in the media industry might bring in more harm than good. Hence, we should trust any news if we see it repeatedly from different media outlets.
